Holiday Reading
When I travel, especially over the holidays, I try to bring along some good reading material. I tend to stack up books I want to read and get to them as I have time. Over the last week, I read two books that I've been looking forward to reading for some time. The first was Wings of Morning by Thomas Childers. Childers chronicles the story of his uncle, a radio man on an ill-fated B-24 bomber, the last American bomber shot down over Germany in World War II. Though the author never met his uncle, he meticulously researched his life through letters, family and friends. Though clearly non-fiction, the reader feels as if he is riding along on every mission over hostile territory and on every libery in London. For a first-hand look at look at the sacrifices of young Americans in the European Theatre, this is an excellent read.

The second book I read this week was eerily similar. It was James Bradley's Flags of Our Fathers. My wife and I saw the film made from this book a couple of months ago but I always like books better than movies. This was no exception. James Bradley is the son of John Bradley, the last of the six flag-planters from the Battle of Iwo Jima in February of 1945. The book traces the backgrounds of these six young men, how they came to be United States Marines and to fight together in the South Pacific theatre of World War II. Three of the six were killed in the later days of the battle. Three came home and were treated as heros as a result of the popularity of the famous photograph. Bradley describes how this pressure along with the memories of their wartime experiences shaped the rest of their lives. I could barely put this one down once I started reading.
Soli Deo Gloria!
